If you’re looking for an easy, crowd-pleasing appetizer that disappears faster than you can refill the bowl, this Cheesy Sausage Dip is it. It’s got a little bit of everything, similar to my Rotel Cream Cheese Sausage Balls and easy Cream Cheese Salsa dip, but then baked until warm and melty and completely irresistible.

Made with cream cheese, Velveeta, fire-roasted tomatoes, and perfectly seasoned with complete seasoning and sausage, this creamy dip is rich, savory, and wildly addictive.

When you’re planning the ultimate game day spread, this dip has got to be on the list! (Right next to the Captain Rodney’s Dip, Buffalo Chicken Pinwheels, and Hot Crab Dip).

The best part is you can be enjoying this in under 20 minutes so there’s truly no excuse not to make it right now!

Why Make This Recipe

  1. Crowd Favorite: This dip checks every box: creamy, cheesy, savory, and perfectly seasoned. It’s always the first dish to disappear at parties and potlucks.
  2. Only 5 Ingredients: You don’t need a long grocery list to make this dip. Just sausage, cream cheese, Velveeta, fire-roasted tomatoes, mozzarella, and seasoning which makes it simple, affordable, and delicious.
  3. Ready Quickly: From stovetop to oven, this dip is quick and easy. It’s perfect for last-minute guests, game nights, and busy weeknights.

My Party Trick: If you’re serving this hot, broiling the cheese on top is great for great cheese pulls! If it will be sitting out for hours, don’t add the cheese to the top, and skip the broiling step all together for a better texture on a room temperature dip.

Ingredient shot of ingredients t make Sausage Cheese Dip.
  1. Ground sausage: You can use hot or mild, depending on your preference. I used hot.
  2. Cream cheese: I prefer full fat but you can use reduced fat if you prefer. Full fat will be a bit creamier.
  3. Velveeta: Velveeta is the perfect consistency for warm, melty dips
  4. Fire Roasted Diced Tomatoes: Fire roasted tomatoes add the perfect smoky flavor to this dip. If you can’t find fire roasted you could substitute some diced tomatoes with green chilies for a slightly southwestern flavor. Use mini tomatoes if you prefer smaller chunks in your dip.
  5. Complete seasoning: Complete seasoning is a pre-packaged seasoning mix of garlic, cumin, coriander, parsley and oregano. You can buy a jar or make your own complete seasoning.
  6. Mozzarella: Mozzarella has a subtle, creamy flavor to it that melts perfectly into this dip. For best results, grate your own rather than buying it pre-shredded.

Mozzarella-topped sausage mixture broiling in a glass dish until the cheese is melted and lightly browned.

Step Four: Place under the broiler until the top is melty and crispy.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t drain the tomatoes. The juice keeps the dip perfectly creamy and scoopable.
  • Hot sausage adds amazing flavor if you like a little kick, but mild sausage works great for family-friendly versions. Choose what works best for you!
  • Always watch carefully when you broil your dip. Different broilers come to different temperatures and you want your cheese bubbly, not burnt.
  • You can keep this dip warm and ready for hours by setting it in a slow cooker. Do not add the cheese to the top, set the slow cooker to warm and stir occasionally to prevent separating.

Recipe FAQs

What Can I Serve With Sausage Dip?

This cheesy sausage dip pairs perfectly with crackers, crostini, tortilla chips, pretzel bites, baguette slices, or even fresh veggies like celery and bell peppers.

Can I Make This Dip Ahead of Time?

You can prepare this dip in advance, cover and refrigerate and then reheat to serve. However, in my opinion the mozzarella cheese in the dip is best served right away when it is hot and melty. That’s when you get the best texture and the best cheese pulls!

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave, stirring after every 30 seconds or place in the oven until warmed through.

Can I Make This Sausage Dip in a Slow Cooker?

Yes! For an even easier prep, place your cooked sausage, cream cheese, velveeta and tomatoes together in a slow cooker and heat on low for about an hour. After an hour, give the dip a good stir and add your mozzarella.

Can I Freeze Sausage Cheese Dip?

I don’t recommend freezing this dip. The fat in the cheese may separate when thawed and the texture just won’t be the same.
