Peeps are one of those foods you either love or you hate. Everyone loves the cute design and the bright colors, but not everyone loves the overwhelming sugary sweetness of the Easter-themed marshmallows.
This recipe is a surefire way to reignite your love for Peeps. Not only do you still get to enjoy the bright colors and all the fun the color brings, but the sugary sweetness is balanced out by rice krispies.

Here is a visual overview of the ingredients in the recipe. Scroll down to the recipe at the bottom for quantities.
- Butter: You can use salted or unsalted
- Rice Krispies Cereal: I prefer to stay on brand for this one.
- Peeps: I like to use multiple colors for a fun layering effect, but you could stick with just one color if you want!
- Food coloring: This is optional to boost the color even more!
Tools
- Microwave safe bowl
- 8×8 pan: You could also use a 9×9 pan but your rice krispie treats will be a bit thinner
How to Make This Recipe
Step One: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a microwave safe bowl.
Step Two: Add one pack of Peeps (one color) and microwave, stirring until fully melted.
Step Three: Mix in Rice Krispies until evenly coated. Repeat the process with the remaining 3 packs of peeps
Step Four: Marble the rice krispie treats by placing small handfuls of color in layers and patches
Step Five: Let the treats cool and slice into squares. Serve & Enjoy!
How to Get Great Colors
Here are some tips for creating the marble effect in your treats:
- If you are using multiple colors, you do need to move quickly to mix and form multiple colors at once!
- I like to marble multiple colors, rather than mixing them all together. Mixing may result in some odd and unappealing colors. If you don’t want to marble your colors, you can also layer them evenly, which is far easier for timing.
- The eyes on the Peeps will transfer to your treats and show up as small dark spots in the finished product. To avoid this, simply remove them before you melt the peeps down.
- The food coloring will give you bold, bright colors like mine. Without food coloring the sprinkles on the peeps will still give some color–just not so vibrant.
Tips for Shaping Your Peeps Rice Krispie Treats
- It helps to use a tiny bit of butter or non-stick spray on your hands or spatula to help push the treats into the pan.
- Once all your colors are shaped into the pan, you still need to let it cool before you cut into it. Trying to cut too quickly will result in treats that are too sticky and nearly impossible to cut!
- For clean slices refrigerate your rice krispie treats and use a warm knife to cut into them. It’s also a good idea to put some parchment paper in your pan to make it easier to lift the entire dessert out of the pan to slice.
Why Are My Rice Krispie Treats Hard?
If your treats turn out a bit hard there may be a few factors. One is you may have accidentally used too much heat. It doesn’t take much heat to melt peeps. Too much heat makes the sugar harden.
You may have also packed your treats too tightly into your pan. You don’t have to pack the treats to make them stick together. Gently press down while they are warm and as they cool they will solidify.
The third thing to watch out for is letting your rice krispie treats get too dry. Be sure and cover your pan with some plastic wrap to keep them from drying out until you are ready to serve.
