Why Make This Recipe
- Tradition: Cinnamon sugar toast is nostalgic for many American children. It’s a simple version of French toast that anyone can whip up in minutes.
- Affordable: This recipe doesn’t call for anything special. You can use any bread you have on hand. Still, it comes out hot and sweet and oh so satisfying!
- Delicious: This recipe has stood the test of time because it is without a doubt just simply delicious. Cinnamon and sugar are a dynamic duo no one can resist.
Ingredients to Make Cinnamon Sugar Toast
- White Bread: You can use any soft sandwich bread you enjoy, though we used Pepperidge Farm white bread. Make this recipe super simple by picking up your favorite brand at the grocery store or step it up a level by making your own homemade bread or using thick slices of brioche.
- Salted Butter: You want your butter nice and soft so it spreads easily on the bread without tearing it.
- Granulated Sugar
- Ground Cinnamon: I have measurements listed but feel free to measure with your heart 😉
Tools
- Baking Sheet
How to Make This Recipe
Step One: Heat the Oven
Move the center rack of the oven upwards, so that it is now close to the coil at the top of the oven. Turn the oven to a low broil and allow it to heat up while you assemble the bread.
Step Two: Prepare the Toast
Brush about 1 Tbsp of butter over each piece of white bread. Then sprinkle ½ Tbsp of granulated sugar over the bread, and ¼ tsp cinnamon on top.
Step Three: Toast
Place the bread slices on a cookie sheet and place them on the top rack in the oven. Allow the bread to broil for about 5 minutes, until the outside edges are toasty and the sugar has bubbled and browned. Keep a close eye on your bread so that it doesn’t burn.
Once toasted, remove the bread from the oven. Allow it to cool for about a minute, then enjoy!
Expert Tips
- Make sure you keep a close eye on your toast while it is toasting. Some oven’s broil features will burn things very quickly.
- If you like your bread a little more toasty, you could toast one side in the oven, then flip it over and add the butter, sugar and cinnamon to the other side.
- You can substitute brown sugar for white sugar for a richer flavor
- You can play around with your ratio of cinnamon to sugar. If you like it a little sweeter, use more sugar. If you like a little more spice, add more cinnamon or a dash of nutmeg.
Alternative Cooking Methods
Method 1: Toaster
Toast your bread in the toaster. When it has finished toasting, butter it and sprinkle it with cinnamon and sugar.
Method 2: Skillet
Add a good amount of butter into a skillet. Once it is hot and melted, add a slice of bread into the skillet. Once the bread has toasted on one side, lift it up and add another dab of butter before flipping the bread over. Add some cinnamon and sugar to the bread as the bottom side is toasting.
Method 3: Mix it All Up
This method is still toasted in the oven but rather than layer the ingredients on top of each other this method calls for you to mix all the ingredients together and then spread them on your bread before putting it into your oven. This is the method the Pioneer Woman swears by and she even mixes a bit of vanilla in with the butter to give the flavor an extra boost.
