Homemade Apple Bread with a Cinnamon Streusel Topping

This Apple Bread is moist, fluffy and topped with cinnamon streusel. This bread mixes up quickly and fills your home with warm fall smells. Apple bread is perfect for breakfast, brunch or a sweet snack.

When fall hits, it’s time for all the apple recipes. While I feel like October is the time for Caramel Apples and Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Dip, November is the time for those apple baked goods.

It’s time for Applesauce Cookies with Brown Butter Frosting and today, it’s time for this amazing Apple Bread.

Apple bread is a quick bread, like banana bread or Easy Zucchini Bread, so it requires no kneading or rising. The apples make it insanely moist and rich and the cinnamon streusel on top makes it totally droolworthy.

If you’re looking to fill your home with warm cinnamon smells and your belly with delicious baked apple flavor, let’s get started!

Why Make This Recipe

  1. Quick Bread: Quick bread doesn’t call for any yeast, kneading or rising. It mixes up in just minutes and rises as it bakes.
  2. Bursting with Apple Flavor: Every bite of this bread is infused with juices from the apple pieces, making each bite taste as comforting as warm apple pie. Yum!
  3. Cinnamon Streusel: I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love a good crumble topping. The cinnamon streusel on top of this bread is incredible!

Ingredients for Apple Bread

Here is a visual overview of the ingredients in the recipe. Scroll down to the recipe at the bottom for quantities.

Ingredients used to prepare apple bread and cinnamon streusel topping are shown.
  1. Apples: I used honeycrisp because they have just the right amount of tartness but you could use Braeburn, Fuji, Pink Lady or Granny Smith. I don’t recommend using Gala or Red Delicious as the flavor is more mild in these varieties.
  2. Shortening: Shortening makes this bread extra moist.
  3. Granulated Sugar: Just the right amount of sweetness for the bread.
  4. Eggs
  5. Buttermilk: Buttermilk gives this bread extra rise and richness of flavor.
  6. All Purpose Flour: No special flour is needed. If necessary, you can substitute this with 1:1 Gluten Free Flour.
  7. Vanilla
  8. Cinnamon: Cinnamon is used in the bread itself and in the crumb topping
  9. Nutmeg & Cardamom: For full fall flavor
  10. Butter and Brown Sugar: For the streusel topping. I don’t recommend using a substitution for the topping!
  11. Baking Soda & Baking Powder: To allow the bread to rise.

Tools

  1. Mixing Bowl
  2. Bread Pan: I use a 9x5x2” bread pan
  3. Apple Peeler

Expert Tips

Cinnamon streusel topped apple bread ready to cut into and enjoy.
  • Allow the bread to cool completely before you try to cut into it. Cutting it too soon will cause it to fall apart.
  • You can use this same recipe to make muffins or mini loaves. Be sure and adjust your cooking time!
  • The cinnamon crumble on top gives this bread plenty of flavor but you could dress it up even more by adding some Maple Cream Cheese Frosting!

How to Store Apple Bread

This bread is even more delicious and moist the second day after baking. Make sure you store it in an airtight container so it does not dry out.

You can also slice the bread and wrap individual slices in plastic wrap to freeze for later.

This bread is fine to be left at room temperature for a day or two, but any longer than that and it should be refrigerated to improve shelf life.

What Are the Best Apples to Use for Baking Apple Bread?

You want to use nice and firm apples for this apple bread recipe so they don’t completely fall apart during the baking process.

You can use just about any apple variety for this recipe. I prefer Honeycrisp but you could use Granny Smith, Braeburn, Pink Lady or Fuji. Gala or Red Delicious may not give as much flavor because they have a higher water content.
