Why Make This Recipe
- Change up a Classic: Baked beans are a classic dish to find at a barbeque or potluck, but this recipe puts a new twist on the dish and brings out a flavor that is entirely unique.
- Salty and Sweet: These beans have the sweetness of apple pie, mixed with the savory goodness of barbeque sauce. You’re going to love it!
- Make Ahead: I think one of the reasons baked beans have been popular as long as they have is they are an easy side to make ahead of time and bring out when you are ready. The flavor just gets better as the ingredients sit together.
Ingredients to Make Apple Pie Baked Beans
- Bush’s Baked Beans: Obviously the foundation of this recipe is some baked beans. I like Bush’s but you can use any brand you prefer.
- White Onion: Onion adds excellent flavor to the mixture and some texture too. Be sure to chop your onions small so no one ends up with a spoonful of onion
- Ground Breakfast Sausage: Sausage is the next layer of flavor for this recipe. It adds just the right amount of savory flavor. You could substitute bacon if you prefer.
- Canned Apple Pie Filling: Again, you can use any brand you prefer. You can find canned apple pie filling in the baking aisle at the grocery store. You could also use homemade apple pie filling for this recipe.
- Mustard: Mustard helps balance out the sweetness so it’s not overly sweet
- Worcestershire sauce: Helps bring out the savory flavors
- Brown sugar: Just a hint to add to the apple filling
- Barbecue Rub Seasoning: I used an applewood rub from McCormick
- Barbecue sauce: Use your favorite brand or even a homemade barbeque if you like

Expert Tips
- You can also cook these baked beans on a smoker for up to 2 hours to add an extra smoky flavor. They also cook well in a crockpot on low for two hours if you’re looking for a hands off method.
- To chop up the apple pie filling, it’s easiest and cleanest to just open the can and stick your knife straight down in the top of the can and make some quick slices towards the edges while the apples are still contained.
Recipe Variations
This recipe is easy to customize to add even more layers of flavor. It is delicious with the addition of:
