Fluffernutter Sandwiches are a classic, nostalgic treat. For centuries, particularly in New England where they claim to have been invented, parents have been serving these sticky, sweet, salty sandwiches to their kids for lunch or a quick afternoon snack.

They are perfect for either. A fluffernutter is an incredibly simple sandwich, which makes it easily available as a snack option, and at the same time it contains peanut butter, which has been a lunchbox staple since the beginning of lunch boxes.

The truth is fluffernutters aren’t just for kids. They are the perfect snack to throw together when your sweet tooth is calling. In less than five minutes you can be biting into a soft, delicious sandwich that will check all the boxes.

All you need is your favorite white bread, peanut butter and marshmallow cream. It doesn’t get any easier than that! Try turning these fluffernutter flavors into these Fluffernutter Cookies for a delicious treat!

What Do You Need to Make This Recipe

Ingredients

Ingredients shown are used to prepare a fluffernutter sandwich.
  1. White Bread: You can use any white sandwich bread you prefer. The softer and sweeter, the better.
  2. Creamy Peanut Butter: You could certainly use crunchy peanut butter if you like a little crunch but there is something so dreamy about the creamy peanut butter mixed with fluffy marshmallow creme. Use any brand you prefer!
  3. Marshmallow Fluff: Traditional fluffernutters are made with marshmallow fluff. There is a difference between marshmallow fluff and marshmallow cream and while that may be important in baking or fudge making, for the purpose of a good ol’ fluffernutter, you can use either one. Use your leftover marshmallow fluff to make this Marshmallow Fluff Frosting or this Booty Dip!

What Does a Fluffernutter Taste Like?

Bite taken out of a creamy fluffernutter stuffed sandwich with mini marshmallows laying around it.

Most of what you taste in a fluffernutter sandwich is the peanut butter, but it is pleasantly sweetened by the marshmallow fluff and the bread. It’s similar to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without the fruity jelly.

Recipe Variations

This sandwich, like any sandwich, is easy to customize and make your own. Here are a few tips to try:

  • Toast the bread: You can either toast your bread before you add your peanut butter and marshmallow fluff or you can add some butter to the outside of your bread and grill it like a grilled cheese. The peanut butter and marshmallow fluff will melt slightly when it is warm, which makes this sandwich extra gooey and messy. The toasted bread adds another layer of delicious flavor and texture.
  • Add Some Flavor: You can add something fruity like jelly, bananas, raspberries or even use strawberry or raspberry marshmallow fluff. You could also add some cookie butter or nutella. Fluffernutter is also delicious with crushed potato chips or bacon bits for a salty little addition.

What to Serve with Fluffernutter

Fluffernutters are the perfect quick snack on their own but if you’re planning on enjoying a fluffernutter for lunch, I would suggest serving with fresh fruit, raw vegetables, pretzels or chips. Don’t forget a cold glass of milk!

Can You Make a Fluffernutter Ahead of Time?

Fluffernutters have always been a classic lunch to send in a kid’s lunch box. They are great for making ahead of time and packing for later because they don’t need to be refrigerated or reheated.

If you plan to pack a fluffernutter I would suggest enjoying it within the same day that you make it. You should also pack it in a hard container. All the ingredients of the sandwich are soft which make it susceptible to being squished.
