How to Make This Recipe
Step One: Heat Treat
Because we are working with unprepared cake mix, it is important to heat treat your cake mix. This cooks off any harmful bacteria and makes it safe to eat unbaked cake mix.
You can heat treat your cake mix in the oven or the microwave.
In the Oven: Spread the cake mix out evenly over a baking sheet. Bake for five minutes at 350 degrees, giving it a good mix halfway through.
In the Microwave: Place the cake mix in a microwave safe mixing bowl and microwave it for two minutes, stirring every 30 seconds. You want the internal temperature of the mix to reach 165 degrees.
Let your mix cool completely before mixing in the rest of your ingredients.
Step Two: Mix
Beat the cream cheese and salt together until creamy. Then add the cake mix and beat again until combined.
Add ⅓ of the Cool Whip into the cake mixture and beat until combined. Add the next ⅓ and beat again. Add the remaining cool whip and beat with the electric hand mixer until just combined.
Pour the milk into the cake batter mix and whip again until combined.
Step Three: Serve
Place your Dunkaroo Dip in a serving dish and top with extra colored sprinkles to serve. Enjoy with graham crackers, waffle cone pieces, oreos, strawberries, pretzels, and more.
Expert Tips
- Many dunkaroo dip recipes call for some vanilla yogurt. You can substitute some of the milk for yogurt if you prefer a thicker dip and the subtle tang of yogurt.
- You can mix sprinkles into the dip if you want more color, but I recommend you do so carefully. The color in sprinkles will easily bleed and mix and you don’t want that. Sometimes heat treating the batter will make the sprinkles less vibrant.

FAQs
You can easily make this dip ahead of time to enjoy later or store leftovers.
Place the dip in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. Gently mix it before serving to make it easier to dip.
This dip can also be frozen for up to three months. Thaw in the fridge overnight and stir very gently. Freezing the dip may cause the sprinkles to break down and spread their color.
I do recommend letting your dip chill for about 30 minutes before serving. This gives the milk a chance to really soak into the cake mix and make it more creamy and smooth. It also gives the cream cheese time to solidify, giving you the best dipping texture.
Recipe Variations
This dip recipe is easy to switch up for different occasions by using a different type of cake mix.
You can use a chocolate cake mix for the chocolate lovers in your life or if you want your dunkaroo dip to fit a certain theme you can use white cake mix and add sprinkles in coordinating colors.
Use green sprinkles for St. Patrick’s Day (along with these St Patrick’s Day Cookies) or red and green for Christmas. Use pink for Valentine’s Day or orange for Halloween.
